A bilum, or string bag, is an important cultural item in Papua New Guinea, traditionally woven from fibers extracted from a special tree found in the bush. The process of creating a bilum is intricate and requires patience. First, the fibers are carefully soaked in water for several days to soften them. Once softened, they are separated, dried, and colored before being twisted and woven into the final bag.
