String woven - Traditional
Traditional String Bag
A bilum, or string bag, is an important cultural item in Papua New Guinea, traditionally woven from fibers extracted from a special tree found in the bush. The process of creating a bilum is intricate and requires patience. First, the fibers are carefully soaked in water for several days to soften them. Once softened, they are separated, dried, and colored before being twisted and woven into the final bag. The art of making the string-woven bag is not only a practical skill but also a form of cultural expression passed down through generations.

Bilum - Nylon
These bilums are skillfully woven with nylon that are bought from the shops, twisted and waved into bilums. Most mothers especially from the Highlands Regions of Papua New Guinea waves it and they either carry it or sometimes they do exchanges with the coastal people for baskets. However, most self-employed mothers wave it and sell them at the markets to meet their daily needs and sustain their families financially. Usually, it takes 12 to 18 days to complete one bilum. There are many different patterns, and the sizes vary with the prices. So, when thinking of something to put your stuff inside and carry to work or school or even a party, get yourself one Papua New Guinea bilum. Its quality, its durable and its affordable.
